Greene and Greene Details II
Workshop
(2-day workshop)
|
 |
|
It's the details that make a Greene &
Greene piece. With more G&G details in your bag of tricks you will
be better prepared to tackle Greene and Greene projects. Details II
will further explore and expand your Greene and Greene vocabulary.
We will make two pulls in the class:
- Blacker Triple Bar Pull (lower right photo)
- each student will take home a cnc jig for routing
the bar cavities
- Dowel and Block Pull (upper left photo)
- this is a James Krenov pull that goes well
with G&G designs
- Drawer Fingers (photo lower left)
- Base Fingers (upper right photo)
- Using a table saw with a dado head we will
make finger joints
in two versions. The method covererd will allow you to easily
produce accurate tight joints without having to change set-ups
for different sizes of drawers.
- Base Straps ( upper righ photo)
- Base Straps were used by Greene & Greene
on the Ford Living Room Letter Case. It's a great detail for
adding visual weight to a piece
- Ebony Plugs ( upper right & lower left
photo)
- Ebony Plugs are ubiquitous in Greene
and Greene designs and are also covered in the Details I class
Come join us for two enjoyable
days full of Greene and Greene woodworking!

Furniture Design: Greene & Greene and Beyond
with Darrell Peart
(1-day workshop)
|
|
This class is intended as an introduction to furniture
design from Darrell's perspective, which is heavily influenced by the
Arts & Crafts Movement and by Greene & Greene. While much of
the discussion will revolve around the designs of Greene & Greene
- it will not be limited to such.
Attendees will be asked to obtain William Varnum's book "Arts &
Crafts Design" and read chapters two through four prior to attending
the class. After which each student is asked bring a sketch (their own
design) to class for review. The class discussion will start with some
basic rules of design and a slide show illustrating examples of basic
proportioning and balance.
While Darrell acknowledges that the rules of design as valid, he also
believes the rules must ultimately be laid aside in favor of intuition.
This class will offer some basic rules to get started as well as strategies
for breaking away and relying upon your intuition.
|
For more on Darrell's design perspective see:
Student Materials
- Arts & Crafts Design by William H Varnum (book)
- Drawing material
- Could be graph paper or small drawing board
with architect scale and pencils etc
- Or could be Drafting program on laptop
- Furniture design by student after reading chapters
two - four in Varnum's book (for review and class discussion)

Tahoma Frame Class
( 1-day class)
|
|

|
|

|
In this one-day class, students will cut
out a Tahoma frame to their custom dimensions. Dimensions are limited
to the jigs which will produce an overall frame in width and height
from 12" to 48". The "S" shaped miter joint will
be cut out in class using Darrell's CNC routing templates.
Greene & Greene ebony pegs will be covered as a part of the class
and a discussion on an appropriate G&G finish for the frame will
be covered as well.
For this first run- through of the class, enrollment will be limited
to eight students.
If time permits, a second frame may be
cut out to be assembled at home.
Please contact Darrell 30 days in advance of the class with the size
of your frame so adequate materials can be on hand.

Rafter Tail Workshop
(5-day class)
If you are signed up for this class
or want more detailed info incliuding drawings of all the designs see
the Rafter Tail Class Page
|
|
|
Inspired by the architecture of Greene & Greene,
the Rafter-tail series of tables utilizes similar parts and joinery
to produce a variety of designs. In this class each student will build
one and possibly two pieces (depending upon the design chosen) from
the given choices. Choices will include a coffee table, nightstand,
end table, plant stands, audio stand, and speaker stands.
Any of the given designs can be custom sized. If speaker stands are
chosen, the exact size of the intended speakers should be brought to
class so the stands can be sized to match. The intended top for these
tables are glass whch is not provided. A slab-wood top can be used for
the top as well - time permitting, may be made in class.
The necessary templates and jigs required to shape
the rafter tails will either be made or provided in class. Drawings
and cultists for all the designs will also be provided. The intent is
that each student will leave the class furnished with the jigs needed
to build a suite of Rafter-Tail tables.
Please contact Darrell at least 30-days in advance with
your choice of design so the neccessary materials can be on hand.
Suggested Tool List

Over a six-day period, we will be building a Greene & Greene style
Blanket Chest. A chest of this size lends itself to a variety of uses
other than storing blankets - coffee table - toy chest - hope chest
- etc.
By the end of the project you will have expanded your experience with
several classic G&G design elements such as making and inserting
ebony plugs, bread board ends with ebony spline, proud finger joints
as well as Darrell's interpretation of the "strap detail"
The finger joints for the case will be machined using a routing template.
All parts of the top (lid) will be made from solid wood.
There will be plenty of hand sanding to soften the ends of the fingered
joints - so you may want to bring some carver's tape (finger guard tape)
to keep your fingers from getting raw.
This will be an enjoyable week to build a piece of furniture in a relaxed
atmosphere and talk about Greene & Greene and woodworking (two of
Darrell's favorite subjects).
This class has proven to be one of my most popular classes.
At the Seattle Woodcraft Store we usually have a waiting list large
enough to fill another class many months in advance.
This year I am extending the class from five to six days. This will
allow us to work at a more reasonable pace and have less or no work
to be finished (less finish/staining) at home.

|
Suggested Tool List

- Small plastic headed mallet
- very small square (3" or so) or square saddle

Arched Aurora End Table/ Nighstand
(6-day class)
|
|
Small tables are a great way to learn and explore new
woodworking techniques and details. This small table is no exception
to that rule. Your woodworking bag of tricks will be bulging with numerous
new items, not the least of which will be several classic Greene &
Greene design elements.
The design is an original by Darrell Peart and is heavily influenced
by Greene & Greene, but embraces other influences as well. Students
can choose to make either a nightstand or an end table by simply changing
the height dimension of the legs.
The six-day course will be filled with discussions (and related tangents
as well) on three of Darrell's favorite subjects: woodworking, Greene
& Greene, and furniture design.
Some of the Items covered will be:
" Greene & Greene Details
o G&G style bread board end
o Proud ebony spline
o Cloud lifts
o Ebony plugs
o Proud "pillowed" fingers
o Waterfall legs
" Krenov style "Block & Dowel Pull
" Fitting of an irregular shaped drawer
" Drawer construction
" Hanging drawers on wooden runners
" finger joints
Darrell's teaching style is relaxed but informative. The atmosphere
is one of an exchange of ideas. Above all else, everyone should enjoy
themselves, and learn something in the process.
